Materials accepted at Appeal Landfill
Residential furniture, mattresses/box springs and all chargeable materials must be taken to Appeal Landfill. View the current tip fee sheet (PDF).
Items Accepted at Appeal Landfill Only
- Refrigerant Appliances - Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners and dehumidifiers. Appliances with Freon or other refrigerant chemical are accepted for proper draining and recycling at Appeal Landfill only. Please take precautions to not damage the Freon lines during transport or drop-off. There is a $10.00 fee per appliance.
- Thermostats and Thermometers - These contain mercury and should be handled with care.
- Propane tanks larger than one pound are charged $5.00 per tank. One pound propane tanks can be recycled at any convenience center for no charge.
- Gas cylinders, such as fire extinguishers, oxygen, carbon dioxide, acetylene, etc., are charged $8.00 per cylinder. Helium tanks are accepted at any convenience center for no charge.
Vegetation and Yard Debris - All leaves, brush, bushes, tree stumps and branches. Current tip fee applies.
Appeal Transfer Station
Safety Rules for Commercial Haulers at Appeal Transfer Station
Waste Management, Inc, which operates the Appeal Transfer Station, has requirements for personal protective equipment (PPE) to preserve the safety of its workers and customers. Effective January 1, 2019, the following requirements for PPE will be enforced at the Appeal Transfer Station.
- The minimum acceptable level of PPE is a hard hat and a class 2 safety jacket, vest or shirt. The PPE must be worn as the outer most layer of clothing.
- Commercial vehicle drivers must wear the minimum acceptable level of PPE at all times when using the Appeal Transfer Station.
- Failure to comply with PPE requirements will result in refusal to unload the vehicle.
Drop-Off & Vehicle Restrictions
No tractor trailers or single-unit vehicles over 30 feet in length will be permitted across the Appeal Landfill scales between the hours of 6 to 8 a.m. Monday through Friday, and 7 to 9 a.m. Saturday. Vehicles with a total length greater than 38 feet will not be permitted across the Appeal Landfill scale without prior approval from the Solid Waste Division Chief.

Tip Fees
The tip fees (the cost per ton of solid waste dumped at the transfer station) apply for all solid waste from commercial customers, Calvert County residents and from out of county. The fees apply to chargeable loads of solid waste brought to the Appeal Landfill. View the current tip fee sheet (PDF).
Payment Information
The Calvert County Solid Waste Division accepts payment by cash or check. Credit card and debit card payments are accepted, a processing fee of 3% for electronic payments will be added to the transaction total. Customers may establish a revolving charge account subsequent to bonding with Calvert County, secured by either a cash bond or letter of credit.
Metal
Metal is accepted at most sites. Refrigerant appliances, such as refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners, are accepted at the Appeal Landfill only with a $10.00 fee per appliance. There is no charge for most metal disposal.
Please remove any attached battery in a metal product before placing it in the metal recycling box. Please see an attendant about the battery.
